When Your Body Needs You
Even though I am quite aware of the importance of taking care of my body and health, after all, I had spent over 30 years getting people to listen to their body and following its wisdom. Still, I was quite taken aback by what happened to me several years ago.
Our Foundation “Attitudinal Healing” was preparing for its autumn public function.
That year, we were holding an art exhibition with music at my art gallery. As president of the Foundation, naturally, I needed to coordinate a number of things. One of those things was organising transportation for the paintings and the artists.
Well, due to circumstances I’d rather not go into here, I freed up my time, organised a small bus owned by a friend and together with my car, went off to pick up the paintings and the artists. Everything went smoothly and together with five other people; we got paintings, artists and bus all in one piece back to my gallery.
We spent the rest of the day doing what most other galleries do in the event of an upcoming show. Hanging up the paintings, labelling them, adjusting the lights, cleaning up, getting things together and thoroughly feeling great about our work. In the past, I’d left most of this initial work to the Artists and their friends. But this time I was all hands on.
When I got back home that night, the exhaustion kicked in. My body ached, my feet burnt from running up and down the stairs and in circles, my head hummed and I felt completely drained.
I realised that there was no way I was going to go through a mentoring class I had coming up at 3:00 AM in the morning! Here was my body telling me very clearly that it needs me. So I flopped down on the couch in the living room and dozed off for a while. When I got up half an hour later, my body felt like lead, which I barely managed to drag along.
That was it! I knew I had to do something fast. I dragged myself down to the bathroom, turned on the tap water and ran the bath added dead sea salt and some drops of rosemary essential oil to the water. I soaked away my entire weariness and tiredness in that bathtub, feeling with every passing minute the relief and the lightness of being again.
After the bath, I curled up into bed with a cup of hot soothing Horlicks for my nerves and went to sleep.
When I got up the next morning, I felt rejuvenated and free of all aches and pains. Even after all these years, the soothing effect of water still never stops to amaze me.
